‘Consciousness’(의식)이라는 단어는 라틴어 con(‘with’)과 scire(‘to know’)의 결합에서 유래하는 것으로 받아들여지고 있다. Gennaro, R.J.(1996), 3쪽 참조.
따라서 의식은 어떤 사람이 다양한 것을 함께 알고 지각하는 능력을 의미한다. 즉 외부 세계 혹은 어떤 사람, 자신의 정신 상태 등을 알 수 있는 능력을 의미한다. 이 점에서 의식은 존재의 측면과 인식의 측면을 모두 아우른다. 하지만 ‘의식’이란 개념 자체는 여전히 일상언어 차원에서나 학문용어로서 그 외연이 확정되지 않은 모호한 상태로 남아 있다. 이 점은 사전 예를 들어, ꡔ새 국어대사전ꡕ (이숭녕 감수, 한국도서출판중앙회, 1996)에서는 의식(意識)을 다음의 세가지 의미로 정의하고 있다. ① 깨어있을 때 사물을 깨닫는 마음의 작용 ② 광의로 知, 情, 意를 포함한 정신 현상 ③ (불) 六識 또는 八識의 하나. 대상을 총괄해서 판단 분별하는 마음의 작용.
에 나타난 정의를 볼 때도 분명하다. 따라서 최종적인 것은 아닐지라도 모호성이 최소화된 의식 개념의 명료화가 일차적으로 요구된다. 먼저 의식 개념과 관련하여 대부분의 사람이 동의하는 부분은 그것이 정신적(심적) 개념이라는 점이다. 하지만 정신적 개념에는 의식 이외에도 사고(thought), 지각(perception), 인지(cognition) 등등의 다양한 개념들이 있다. 우리의 일상언어에서 의식은 이러한 개념들과 의미상 서로 중첩되게 사용되기도 한다. 그러면 의식이 이런 개념들과 구분될 수 있는 점은 무엇인가? 한마디로 의식이 갖고 있는 현상적 경험의 측면이다. 이런 이유에서 의식 경험은 현상적 측면과 기능적(심리적) 측면이라는 이중적 측면을 갖는다. 이 두 측면 중에서 우리는 의식이 갖는 ‘주관적이고 현상적인 성질’을 그것의 고유한 특징으로 정의한다.
