Abstract
Although the present age can be called the age of computer, the age of Internet, or the age of cyberculture, it is not off the point to say that it is also the visual age. In this context, this age demands a serious contemplation on the relationship between literature and film that has opend up the visual age. First of all, I had to deal with the issues like what art is and whether film can be an authentic art form, because there has been a constant tendency among the serious intellectuals to refuse to view film as art. And I went on to discuss the relationship between literature and film in terms of their affinities and differences, the merits and disadvantages of the cinema. As an attempt of practical criticism, I analyzed the four films (two versions of Macbeth, Tom Jones, and Apocalypse Now) which are based on the literary works. Concluding this essay on film, I brought up another issue of art, that is, the function of art to set forth the raison d`etre of true films as true works of art.
