Pierre de Coubertin drew his inspiration from the ancient Olympic Games which were held in Olympia(Greece) between the 8th century B. C. and 4th century A. D.

The LEGACY OF THE PAST
과거로부터의 유산
  In 1896, more tham 1,500 years after the ancient Games were banned, the first modern Olympic Games featured many references to this legacy of Greek Antiquity. The IOC`s decision to hold  them in Athens(Greece) was a reminder that Olympic Games originated in Greece. The majority of the competitions took place in the ancient stadium(the Pananthenaic Stadium), which was restored for the occasion. Most of the sports on the programme of the ancient Olympic Games were echoed  in the modern Games. 1896년, 고대 경기가 금지된 이후 1500년이 더 지나서, 최초의 근대 올림픽 경기가 고대 그리스시대의 많은 부분을 참고하여 물려받음으로써 형태를 갖추게 되었다. 국제올림픽위원회는 올림픽 경기가 그리스에서 기원되었다는 것을 상기시키기 위하여 첫번째 경기를 그리스 아테네에서 갖기로 결정하였다. 주요 경기는 그것을 위해 다시 재건된 고대 경기장(판아테나익 스타디움)에서 진행이 되었다. 고대 올림픽 경기에서 진행되었던 대부분의 경기종목이 근대 경기에 재현되었다.
