Kim, Hyun-Hyo. 2006. A Research on Argument Alternations. The Journal of Studies in Language 22.1, 65-84. This paper examines the semantic properties of argument alternations in English sentences. Conceptual structures of alternations are reviewed by Jackendoff(1990, 2003) and he shows neither syntactocentric nor purely semantically based theory is enough to explain argument structures. The interactions between verb classes and alternations are well described by Levin(1993) focusing on the correlation between semantic classes of verbs and their differing interactions with alternations. She has classified verbs under the idea that the meaning of a verb determines its syntactic behavior. Dowty(2001) notices Levin(1993) lacks the explanation on the semantic effect involved in the alternation and why each alternation pattern should be associated with its particular combination of semantic features of verb meaning.
