국제관계학은 본격적인 분과학문으로 자리 잡은 이차대전 이래 최대의 위기와 혼란에 빠져 있다. 국제관계 현실을 바라보는데 안내자 역할을 할 방향타를 상실한 채, 온갖 새로운 현상이 돌출하는 “미지의 바다를 떠돌고 있는 것이다”(Keohane 1996, 462). 그러나 이론의 위기는 동시에 새로운 이론을 모색할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기도 한다. 기존의 개념과 전제들이 지니고 있던 문제점들이 재검토되고 새로운 시각과 방법들이 도입되어, 국제관계 현상을 보다 잘 이해하고 새로운 현상들까지 설명할 수 있는 대안적 이론들이 시도되고 있는 상황이다.
이러한 “이론적 혼돈”을 정리하고 국제관계학의 새로운 대상과 방법을 소개하는 것이 이 장의 목적이다. 이를 위해 먼저 국제관계 이론이 처해있는 상황에 대해 살펴보고 새로운 이론들이 모색되고 있는 방향에 대해 검토한다.

국제관계학은 본격적인 분과학문으로 자리 잡은 이차대전 이래 최대의 위기와 혼란에 빠져 있다. 국제관계 현실을 바라보는데 안내자 역할을 할 방향타를 상실한 채, 온갖 새로운 현상이 돌출하는 “미지의 바다를 떠돌고 있는 것이다”(Keohane 1996, 462). 그러나 이론의 위기는 동시에 새로운 이론을 모색할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기도 한다. 기존의 개념과 전제들이 지니고 있던 문제점들이 재검토되고 새로운 시각과 방법들이 도입되어, 국제관계 현상을 보다 잘 이해하고 새로운 현상들까지 설명할 수 있는 대안적 이론들이 시도되고 있는 상황이다.
이러한 “이론적 혼돈”을 정리하고 국제관계학의 새로운 대상과 방법을 소개하는 것이 이 장의 목적이다. 이를 위해 먼저 국제관계 이론이 처해있는 상황에 대해 살펴보고 새로운 이론들이 모색되고 있는 방향에 대해 검토한다.
