서문에서 호돈은 세관사무소에서 세일럼의 세관 검사관으로서 그가 겪은 3년간의 경험을 소설화하여 서술하고 있다. (세일럼은 전에는 붐비는 항구였으나 이제는 거의 버려진 상태로 놓여있다.) 그 세관에서는 언제나 졸리는 듯한 연로한 직원들이 일하고 있으며 사무실 안에는 나른한 안락함이 깔려있다. 호돈은 그 세관의 버려진 윗 층 방에서 금실로 A字 모양의 수를 놓은 주홍색 천 한 조각을 발견하다. 그것과 함께 헤스터프린의 일생을 적어 놓은 세일 럼의 전 검사관 조나던퓨의 수기(手記)도 발견하다. 공화당…
