본문/내용
자폐증의 핵심적인 특징으로는 사회성 결핍, 인지적 결함, 언어 및 의사소통 장애, 그리고 동일성에 대한 집착 등을 들 수 있다. 언어 및 의사소통 장애의 특징과 그것들의 역할에 관해서는 1943년 Kanner가 자폐아동의 특성에 관해 기술한 이후 많은 논란이 있어왔다. 언어장애는 자폐증의 여러 증상 중 하나일 뿐이지 자폐증을 이해하는데 중추적인 역할을 하는 것은 아니라는 견해와 이와는 반대로 자폐증의 기본 증상을 언어장애로 보는 견해가 있다. 자폐아동이 자신의 연령수준에 맞게 말하지 못하고 의사소통하지 못하는 것과 언어장애가 자폐증을 대표할 수 있는 증상이라는 것에 관해서는 일반적으로 동의하고 있지만 이러한 발달장애에게서 특이하게 나타나는 언어장애의 특성에 관해서는 여러 가지 견해가 대두되어왔다. 즉 자폐아동의 언어는 단지 지체되어 있는 것인지 아니면 정상에서 완전히 이탈되어있는 것인지, 언어획득과정이 정상아동의 획득과정과 비슷하게 나타나는지 아니면 서로 다른 과정으로 나타나는지, 언어장애가 자폐증의 주 증상인지 아니면 사회-정서적인 면에 부수적으로 나타나는 증상인지 등의 견해가 있어왔다.
