초기 에게 문명
초기문화의 흔적으로 그리스 본토에서는 구석기시대 사냥꾼들이 돌을 깨뜨려 만든 연장이 곳곳에서 발견되었지만 크레타를 비롯한 다른 섬에서는 아직까지 하나도 발견되지 않았다. 아르고스 만(灣)에 있는 프랑크티 동굴을 발굴한 결과 BC 1만 3000년경부터 이미 크레타 북쪽 멜로스 섬까지 배가 왕래했다는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 이 무렵에는 잡종 곡식 재배와 가축 사육, 조직적인 다랑어 잡이도 이미 시작되어 있었다.
