일반적으로 어떠한 조직의 생산성과 효율성을 높이는 데 영향을 주는 요인에는 여러 가지가 있을 수 있으나 그 중에서도 조직의 장이 행사하는 지도성은 매우 중요한 요인이 아닐 수 없다. 학교조직의 경우에도 결코 예외는 아니어서 학교조직 발전을 촉진하는 데에는 학교장의 지도성이 거의 결정적임은 부인하기 힘들다.
지도성행동에 관한 연구는 Hemphill과 Coons(1957:6-38)에 의해서 '지도성 행동 기술 척도(Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire : LBDQ)가 최초로 개발되면서 본격적으로 이루어졌고, 그 후에 Halpin과 Winer(1957:39-51)가 이를 수정 보완하면서 더욱 광범위하게 사용되었다. 최근에 House와 Baetz(1979:341-423)는 구성개념(scientific construct)으로서의 지도성에 대한 연구를 수행하기 위하여 새로운 방향을 제시하고 있다. 이뿐만 아니라 지도자의 지도성행위에 관한 연구는 우리 나라에서도 교육행정 분야에서 어느 주제보다도 많이 다루어지고 있다(서정화, 1982:53).
