본문/내용
대가급 시인들 중에서 Keats만큼 그 태생이 미천했던 시인도 없을 것이다. Keats의 부친은 London에 있는 어느 삯마차집의 마부장이였는데, 주인의 딸과 결혼하여 그 사업을 이어받았다. Keats의 어머니는 모든 기록에 비추어 볼 때 대단히 관능적인 여성이었으며, 네 자녀에게는 좀 변덕스럽기는 하지만 자애로운 어머니였다. Keats는 엔필드에 있는 John Clarke목사의 사립학교에 다녔으며, 학교에서 그는 소란스럽고 씩씩한 소년이었다. 작은 체구에도 불구하고 법석을 떨고 주먹다짐을 하는데는 단연 두각을 나타냈다. 여기서 Keats는 Charles Cowden Clarke를 스승으로 모시는 행운을 얻게 되었다. 그는 교장의 아들로써 후에 그 자신도 문인이 된 사람이었다. 그는 Keats가 학교에 다니는 동안에도 그리고 그후 그들이 친교를 맺어 사귀는 동안에도 그의 독서열을 북돋아 주었고 Spenser를 비롯한 시인들을 소개해 주었으며 음악과 연극에 입문시켜 주었다.
Keats가 8세때 부친이 낙마로 인하여 사망하고 14세때는 어머니마저 폐결핵으로 사망하였다. 삯마차집은 영업이 잘 안되었고 또 Keats의 조모가 손자들에게 8,000파운드의 금액을 신탁으로 남겨주었지만 부…(생략)
