본문/내용
구술자료의 또 하나의 특징은 양적 방법을 주로 사용하고 있는 대부분의 사회과학 연구와 달리, 질적 방법의 하나로서 연구자와 연구 대상(구술자)의 상호작용 속에서 자료가 만들어진다는 것이다. 이러한 상호작용은 구술사 연구가 연구자와 구술자와의 공동작업적 성격을 가지게 한다. 구술자료는 구술이 언제, 어디서, 누구에게, 어떤 목적으로 되어지느냐에 따라 그 판본이 달라질 수 있고, 다양한 해석이 가능하다. 즉 연구자와 구술자의 상호 관계와 상황에 따라서 다양한 이야기들이 가능하다는 것이다. 또한 구술은 단순히 연구자의 질문에 따라 수동적으로 만들어지는 것이 아니라, 구술자가 구술 상황에서 능동적으로 자신의 과거의 경험을 해석해내는 작업이다. 따라서 구술자는 단순히 연구 대상이라고 볼 수 없다. 구술자는 바로 그 구술의 주체이고 해석자이기 때문에, 구술사 연구는 연구자가 모든 공을 인정받는 것이 아니라, 연구자와 구술자가 함께 만들어내는 것이다
