낭만주의 시대에 들어 셰익스피어는 찬미의 대상일 뿐 어느 비평가도 그의 작품의 결점을 드러내어 비난하지 않았다. 비평가들은 셰익스피어의 상상력과 천재성에 매혹되어 모두 열광적인 찬사를 보냈다. 그러나 신고전주의 시대에는 그의 작품을 두고 찬사와 비난이 엇갈렸다. 신고전주의 극 비평은 모두 삼일치의 법칙, 시적정의, 데코럼(decorum)과 장르의 문제에 매달려 있었다. 따라서 신고전주의 비평가들은 셰익스피어의 작품들이 극작에 있어 가장 중요한 삼일치의 법칙을 위반하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 셰익스피어가 한 작품에 비극과 희극의 장르를 혼용하고 있으며, 어울림의 관례를 위반하고 있다고 비판하였다. 셰익스피어가 구사하는 말재롱(pun)과 지나친 과장, 천박한 익살과 상스러운 농담 역시 비판의 대상이다. 『햄릿』(Hamlet)이 무지의 시대에 쓰여진 “한낱 술에 취한 야만인”의 천박한 작품이라는 불란서의 신고전주의 비평가 볼테르(Voltaire)의 비난은 아마 셰익스피어에 관한 가장 혹독한 비판 중의 하나 일 것이다(qtd. in Furness 381).
