영어단어의 강세는 여러 언어와 마찬가지로 더러는 음운규칙에 의해 결정되고 더러는 고유한 특성을 지닌 체계로 되어 있다. 대체로 단어의 강세가 어떻게 부여되는지 예측 불가능한 경우가 많다. 영어의 일부 강세형에 대해서 적어도 어느 정도의 일반화를 인정하면서도 SPE 이전의 연구는 영어를 자유강세를 가지는 언어로 다루어 왔다. 최근에 이르기까지 영어단어는 각기 다른 특이한 강세형을 가지는 것으로 생각했으며 Jones(1967:248)조차도 “generally speaking there are no rules determining which syllable or syllables of polysyllabic English words bear the main stress”라고 언급하고 있다. 그렇다고 해서 어휘강세의 기저에 규칙이나 원리가 존재하지 않는다는 뜻은 아니다. 원어민 화자들이 ”영어답지 않는“(un-English) 것으로 거부하게 될 특정한 강세의 유형이 존재한다. 예를 들면, podectal과 같은 무의미 단어를 원어민 화자라면 누구나 podéctal로 발음을 하지 결코 *pódectal로 발음하지는 않을 것이라는 점을 Liberman & Prince(1977)는 지적하고 있다. 이러한 증거는 어휘강세를 지배하는 어떤 음운규칙이나 원리가 있어서 …(생략)
