본문/내용
지리교육은 우선 지리학의 기본 개념과 이론을 통하여 생활공간을 이해하고, 환경이용자로서 가져야 할 바람직한 행동과 태도를 기르기 위한 계획적인 활동이라고 정의할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 간단한 정의만으로는 지리교육이 무엇인지를 알기 어렵다.
지리교육을 이해하기 위해서는 몇가지 관련되는 환경변인을 고찰해야 한다. 즉, 교육이 이루어지는 당시의 지리학 연구내용과 연구방법 및 발전수준을 먼저 살펴보아야 하고, 그리고 시대적 상황과 교육적 요구 및 교육목적을 살펴보아야 한다. 그런데 이중에서도 지리학의 성격을 살피는 일이 가장 중요하다. 다른 교과와 구별될 수 있는 지리교육의 정체성(identity)은 무엇보다도 가르치는 내용을 이루는 지리적 지식의 특성에 의해서 좌우되기 때문이다. 그러나 지리학 그 자체가 곧 지리교육이 아닌만큼 각 시대와 각 국가에서 이루어지는 교육의 구체적인 모습도 함께 살피지 않으면 안된다. 교육이 이루어지는 장소나 교육대상, 혹은 교육목적이 달라짐으로 해서 지리교육의 구체적인 모습이 어떻게 달라지는지를 살펴야 할 것이다. 특히 오늘날과 같은 제도교육이 정착되지 않았던 고대나 중세시대의 지리…(생략)
