Ⅰ. 서론 : 비잔틴 철학의 정체성과 의의
‘비잔틴 철학(philosophia byzantina)’이란 로마 제국이 비잔티움으로 천도한 기원 후 3세기말부터 동서분립(395년)을 거쳐 1453년 그 멸망에 이르기까지의 비잔틴제국, 즉 동로마제국에서 일어난 철학을 일컫는다. 이 제국은 서양세계를 지탱해 온 세 가지 기둥이라 할 수 있는 로마적 정치체제, 기독교적 종교, 헬라적 문화로 이뤄진 사회였고, 라틴문화를 계승한 서방과는 그 사상적, 문화적 성격이 판이했다. 특히 이 제국의 철학은 후기고대에 그 주도권을 Athene에서 넘겨받아 Alexandria와 Byzantium을 중심으로 융성, 발전케 되었다. Alexandria의 철학아카데미는 주후 6세기에 그 사상적 발전과 학문연구에 있어 정점에 달했으며 9세기에서 15세기까지는 콘스탄티노플이 철학과 신학을 주도했다.
그간 여러 학자들이 지적해 온 바대로 초기의 연구가들은 비잔틴철학의 독자성을 인식하거나 인정할려고 하지 않고 단지 Platon과 Aristoteles사상의 반향(反響)내지 각주(脚註-A.H.Whitehead 식의 표현을 빌리면)정도로 간주했다. 하지만 20세기중반이후의 연구가들은 비잔틴철학의 독창성내지 자율성을 내세우고 있다.…(생략)
