참스키 문법에서 관계절을 유도하는 관계사는 의문 명사구 즉 who와 which만을 관계사로 취급하고 있다. 그러나 본 절에서는 전통문법가의 이론에 따라서 의문 명사구뿐만 아니라 that 관계사 that의 신분에 대하여서는 전통문법과 참스키 문법에서 서로 다르게 분석한다. 전 문법(쿠억크(Quirk et al.), 1986:366)에서는 관계대명사로 분석하는 반면에 참스키 문법에서는 다음과 같은 이유로 보문자로 취급한다: (1) 전형적인 관계사 who와 which는 전치사의 보충어로 사용될 수 있지만, that은 그렇지 못하다. (2) 전형적인 명사구는 속격을 가진다(예: John’s). 관계사 who, which도 역시 속격형 whose를 가지고 있지만 that은 속격형이 없다. (3) 의문대명사는 통사적 또는 의미적 특성을 가지고 있으나, that은 그렇지 못하다. (4) 의문대명사는 정형절과 부정사절에 자유롭게 나타날 수 있으나, for는 부정사절만을 인도하며, that과 if는 정형절만을 인도한다. (5) 의문사이동의 특성 중 하나는 이동하는 의문사구가 공백을 남겨둔다. 만약 that가 관계사라면 다음과 같은 예에서 이동한 그 위치에 공백을 남겨두어야 할 것이다. 그…(생략)
