반면에 ②의 어휘부학은 모든 언어에 적용될 수 있는 학문이다. IA 방식이 잘 적용되는 교착어는 물론 비선조적인 조작을 많이 사용하는 언어의 경우에도 단어들 사이의 관계를 network로 파악하여 탐구하는 접근법은 정당하게 성립된다. 따라서 어휘부학이 형태론의 중심을 이룬다고 할 수 있다. 형태소배열론이나 굴절론은 언어의 특성에 따라 중요한 위치를 차지할 수도 있고 주변적이거나 아예 존재하지 않을 수도 있다. 더욱이 굴절형들이 모두 어휘부에 저장된다는 입장을 취한다면 굴절론도 어휘부학 속에 포괄될 수 있다. 단어들 사이의 관계, 즉 어휘적 조직(lexical organization)에 대한 탐구가 형태론의 핵심이라는 입장은 Bybee(1985, 1988)에서 제기된 바 있고, 이런 관점에 입각한 어휘부의 구조에 대한 탐구는 최근 인지과학이나 자연언어처리, 사전학 등의 분야와 맞물려 그 중요성이 한층 부각되고 있다.
