II. 정보통신기술의 성격
먼저 정보통신기술이 지니고 있는 성격을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 과연 새로운 정보통신기술은 전통적인 자동화기술과는 어떠한 점에서 유사점과 차이점을 지니는가?
정보통신기술이 광범위하게 확산되기 시작한 것은 1980년대 중반에 들어와서부터이다. 이미 컴퓨터는 1950년대부터 발전하였지만, 80년대 초반까지의 컴퓨터는 대체로 개별시스템으로만 존재하였다. 개별시스템으로만 존재한다는 것은 각각의 컴퓨터들이 생산과 사무의 자동화를 이루는 중요한 기반이 되지만, 상이한 컴퓨터들끼리의 네트웍이 구성되지 않아 다양한 기능들간의 연결성·통합성이 결여되어 있었다는 것을 의미한다. 그러나 80년대 중반으로 들어오면 네트웍을 그 특징으로 하는 정보통신기술이 널리 확산된다. 정보통신기술은 일반적으로 변환(conversion), 저장(storage), 처리(processing), 그리고 통신(communications)의 4가지 기능을 가지고 있다. 변환이란 투입(input)을 산출(output)로 바꾸는 기능이고, 저장이란 정보를 다양한 형태로 보존하는 기능이며, 처리란 투입된 정보를 다양한 형태로 처리·계산하는 기능이며, 통신이란 이러한 정보를 공…(생략)
