감정억압
피해자들은 불쾌한 감정을 억압함으로써 고통을 경감시킬 수 있기 때문에 분노나 적개심을 누름으로써 외상을 잊어버릴 수 있다. 그래서 흔히 성폭력 피해자들은 별로 감정이 없이 무덤덤한 태도를 보이는 경우가 많다. 특히 치료초기의 피해자들은 신체증상만 열거할뿐 자신의 감정에 대해서는 전혀 알지도 못하고 말하지도 않는 경우도 많다.
한편, 감정억압은 부정적인 감정뿐만 아니라 긍정적인 감정도 억압할 수 있다. 즉, 행복한 감정이 느껴질 때 이를 눌러버림으로써 행복감을 못느끼는 것이다. 흔히 피해자들은 행복한 순간 뒤에 불행이 따랐던 경험이 있기 때문에 행복감을 두려워하여 이를 억압하기 때문이다. 그들에게 있어 행복은 믿을 수 없는 감정이다. 행복에 대한 희망이 계속 짓밟힌 경험이 있기 때문에 행복 감은 불쾌감을 불러일으키는 단서가 된다. 행복은 언제 끝날지 모르기 때문에 오히려 불안하다.
인지왜곡
