인류의 역사를 통해서 볼때 가족과 가족생활은 인간에 있어서 가장 근본이 된 문화이자 생존 의 구체적 흔적이었다. 이 말은 인간의 삶과 생애의 내용에서 가족이나 가족생활을 배제할 수는 없다는 것을 의미한다. 뿐만아니라 국가나 사회, 조직에 의해서도 가족의 의미와 중요성은 강조되어 왔으며 그러하기에 가족에 대한 관심은 여러 분야에서 제기되었고 학문적으로도 다양한 접근들이 깊이 있게 이루어져 왔다. 사회사업실천은 가족에 대한 그러한 관심과 연구에서 아주 두드러지게 나타나는 분야중의 하나이다. 사회사업전문직은 주지하다시피 19세기 말과 20세기 초에 걸쳐서 발달하기 시작한 것이었다. 따라서 사회사업실천에서 가족에 대하여 관심을 가지기 시작한 것도 이때 부터라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
사회사업실천에 있어서 가족은 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 사회사업이 하나의 전문직으로 발달하게 하였던 미국에서 이들 양자의 관계를 본다면 타 영역에 비해서 그리 오랜기간은 아니라 할지라도 하나의 전문직으로서 사회사업은 가족과 매우 밀접한 상관관계를 가지고 있는 것으로 간주되어 왔다.
