In my opinion, being interculturally aware means that someone recognizes or is surprised about the difference and similarity of cultural things while talking to each others. The examples of cultural things are foods, behaviors, habits, policies, customs, religions, and so on. This recognition and surprise are basically based on the comparison of their own cultures.

When a person recognizes big difference from other culture, or when they expect the things to be different or similar for granted but the fact is that their cultures are quite similar or very different respectively. Then the listener can think that the cultures of the speaker and listener are almost same or totally different even though they have quite different cultures or quite similar cultures respectively. Suppose that if one says, ¡°Some people in my country worship some strange things¡±, and another says, ¡°Ours, too.¡± They can think that their cultures are almost same, but the result depends on what each culture person worship. One culture worships stone and another culture prays for the UFO, then their cultures are different.
