미국의 발명가인 에디슨은 평생 미국에서살면서 연구활동을 했다. 에디슨은 세계에서 가장 많은 것을 만든 발명가로 1천 93개의 발명품에 대한 특허를 얻었다.

백열 전기 램프, 영사기,축음기 들이 에디슨이 발명한 것이다. 또한 최초로 산업 연구소를 설립하기도 했다.

1868년에 전기 투표기록기를 발명하여 최초의 특허를 받았다. 이어서 다음해에는 주식상장표시기를 발명하였고 그 발명으로 얻은 자금을 기반으로 뉴저지주에 공장을 세웠다. 그후 에디슨은 1871년에 인자전신기, 1872년에 이중전신기, 1876년에 탄소전화기, 1877년에 축음기, 1879년에 백열전등, 1891년에 영화 촬영기,영사기, 1900~1910년에 에디슨 축전기 등을 계속 발명했다.
