정신분석에서 환자와 분석가 모두의 욕망이 나타나는 분석의 상황을 ‘전이’(transference)라 한다. 피터 브룩스(Peter Brooks)는 환자와 분석가의 관계를 나타내는 이 전이의 개념으로 텍스트와 독자의 관계를 설명한다. 브룩스에 의하면 독자는 마치 환자의 담론에 개입하는 분석가처럼 읽기를 통해서 텍스트에 개입한다. 독자는 텍스트에 씌어진 것뿐만 아니라 그 텍스트의 숨은 의도가 무엇인지, 함축적인 의미가 무엇인지 파악하려 한다. 즉, 독자는 텍스트가 제공하는 것을 그대로 받아들이지 않고 텍스트를 다시 쓰려 한다. 그 결과 독자에게 영향력을 미치고자 하는 텍스트의 욕망과 독자의 욕망이 결합해서 새롭게 각색된 독자 자신의 이야기가 만들어진다. 그러나 독자가 개입해서 만들어낸 이 각색된 담론은 고정된 것이 아니라 새로운 독자에 의해 새롭게 읽혀지고, 재배열되고, 재해석될 수 있는 가능성이 항상 존재한다. 그러므로 텍스트의 의미는 전이의 과정 속에서 만들어진다. “의미는 단지 ‘텍스트 속에’ 존재하는 것도, 전적으로 독자 (혹은 독자들의 공동체)에 의해 만들어지는 것도 아니다. 의미는 텍스트와 독자의 대화를 통한 투쟁과 협력 속에서…(생략)
