그러한 의미에서 2막 2장에서의 햄릿과 폴로니우스의 조우 장면은 중요한 의미를 띄운다. 우선 햄릿은 폴로니우스를 생선장수(fishmonger, 176, 191)라고 부르는데 생선장수의 의미에 대해서는 그간 많은 논의들이 있어왔다. 당시의 은어의 한 형태로서 수녀원(nunnery)이 창녀촌이었다는 사실과 관련지어 생선장수가 뚜쟁이라는 역사적 의미를 부여하려는 주장도 있고, 그 외의 생선장수 직업조합과 관련된 정치집단으로서의 해석도 가능할 수 있다. 뉴 케임브리지판 ꡔ햄릿ꡕ의 편집자 필립 에드워드(Philip Edward)는 생선장수에 대한 각주에서, 그 의미에 관한 여러 가지 논란들이 전체로서의 의미에 별다른 영향을 줄 수 없기에 그리 중요하지 않고, 그러한 논란이 바람직하지 않다고 못박은바 있다(126). 그러나 그러한 언급에 반론을 제기할 만한 중요한 고전으로서의 원전이 있다. 그것은 쥬베날 쥬베날리스(Juvenal Juvenalis)의 풍자시(Satire)의 제 4풍자에 등장하는, 길거리 생선장수에서 재상에까지 오른 늙은 크리스피누스(Crispinus)의 정보정치와 정치적 악행에 관한 혹독한 풍자이다. 그에 관한 이야기는 ꡔ햄릿ꡕ의 전체의미를 해석…(생략)
