벨로우가 말하는 “전쟁”(wars)에서의 적은 대중문화와 그것을 지지하는 대중문화 옹호론자들이다. 예를 들어 잰 지타 그로버(Jan Zita Grover)와 같은 문화론 비평가(cultural studies critic)는 상기 문화 엘리트 주의자들의 “비지식인들에 대한 문화 해석 능력에 대한 불신”을 강하게 비판하고(229), 로렌스 레빈(Lawrence Levine)은 블룸의 닫힌 미국 사회에 대한 비판을 『미국 마음의 열림』(The Opening of the American Mind)에서 반박하며, 교육학자 벤자민 바버(Benjamin Barber)는 그들의 생각은 “고귀한 거짓말”(Noble Lie)이며 그들을 “민주주의의 적”(a blight on democracy)이라고 힐난한다(152). 벨로우적인 문화론이 공격을 받은 이유에는 또 다른 사회적 배경이 있다. 벨로우가 위원회의 이상을 적극적으로 지지하고 『허조그』에서 그것을 작품화하기 시작한 1960년대는 영국을 중심으로 문화에 대한 재해석이 활발한 시기였다. 오늘날 문화론 비평의 시조격인 레이몬드 윌리암스(Raymond Williams), 리차드 호가트(Richard Hoggart), 스츄어트 홀(Stuart Hall) 등이 1960년대를 전후하여 문화에 대한 개념을 바꾸었다. 윌리암스는 그의 저서 『장기…(생략)
