어떤 사람들은 고든이 선교 사업을 위해 예정되어 있던 인물이라고 이야기하기도 한다. 고든은 1836년 4월 19일에 태어났다. 침례교인인 그의 부모는 미국 침례교 선교의 개척자인 아도니람 저드슨의 이름을 따라 아도니람 저드슨 고든이라고 이름지었다. 그의 아버지 존 칼빈 고든은 뉴햄프셔에서 가업인 모사(毛)공장을 운영하고 있었다. 고든은 15, 16세 즈음 회심사건이 일어나기 전까지 그저 공장에서 일하거나 친구들과 놀면서 자라났다. 회심사건을 통해 그는 목회자가 되기로 결심하고 그때까지 중요성을 느끼지 못했던 학교 교육의 필요성을 깨닫게 되었다. 고든은 집에서 짠 허름한 옷을 입고 손에는 책가방을 들고 34마일 되는 거리를 걸어서 고등학교에 다니기 시작하였다.
1856년 고든은 브라운 대학에 입학하였다. 졸업 후, 뉴튼신학교(오늘날 엔도버―뉴튼신학교로 통합하기 전의 침례교 신학교) 에서 신학 과정을 끝마쳤다. 평범한 학생이었지만 설교를 잘하는 목사로 장래가 촉망되던 고든은 1863년 메사추세츠 웨스트 락스버리(West Roxbury)에 있는 자마이카 플래인(Jamaica Plain) 침례교회에 부임하였다. 목회활동을 하면서 마리아 헤일과 결혼하여 아이…(생략)
