수많은 연구들이 정상 뇌량을 가진 사람들의 좌우 시야에 잠깐동안 단어를 제시하여 행해지고 있다. 이 연구들의 논리는 단어를 처음 제시받은 반구가 적절한 처리를 할수 있다면 이 단어에 반응 하는 것에 있어서 잇점이 있을 것이고, 반면, 다른 반구에서는 정보가 후속하여 전달되어야 할 것이기 때문에 반응시간이 지연될 것이라고 본다. 예를들어, 몇몇 연구들은 우반구는 매우 구체적이고 심상이 가능한 단어를 처리하는데 있어서 비교적 우수하고, 다른 유형의 단어를 처리하는데 있어서는 비교적 느릴 것이라고 본다(Coltheart, 1987). 그러나 이러한 결론은 논쟁의 여지가 많다(Parkin, 1996). Chiarello와 그의 동료들(chiarello 등, 1990; Chiarello, & Richards, 1992)은 비연합 범주(cat-goat처럼 범주적으로는 관련이 있지만 연합적으로는 자주 함께 사용되지 않는 단어)의 자극을 좌시야 혹은 우시야에 제시하여, 단어가 대측의 반구에 의해서 선택적으로 처리되도록 하는 조건과 자극을 중앙에 제시하는 조건으로 나누어 실험하였다
