1. 상품 생산 기지로서 대학
슈마르(W. Shumar)는 최근의 대학을 ‘대학은 세일 중’(College for Sale)이라는 희화적 표현으로 묘사하고 있다. 그에 따르면 대학 개혁의 배경이 되고 있는 신자유주의는 교육을 하나의 상품으로 바라보고, 대학이 상품화가 가능한 지식 생산 기관이어야 한다고 주장한다 W. Shumar (1997). College for Sale : A Critique of the Commoditification of Higher Education (London : The Falmer Press).. 이처럼 신자유주의는 대학을 경제적 가치에 따라 존재의 정당성을 판단하고 평가하는 ‘시장에 의한 정당화’(legitimacy of markets)를 중시한다.
실제로 대학에 대한 국가의 영향력이 감소하고 시장의 영향력이 증대되면서 기업과 소비자들의 요구에 적합하지 않은 교육은 존립의 정당성을 확보하기 어렵게 되었다. 교육은 소비자의 구미에 맞도록 생산되고 포장되어 유통되고 구매되는 상품으로 변화하였으며, 교육 목적의 타당성이나 효과도 경제적 기준에 따라 결정되게 되었다. 지식의 정당성이 그것이 참이냐 거짓이냐의 여부가 아니라 상품화의 가능성과 같은 경제적 가치에 따라 결정되기 때문에 얼마나 …(생략)
