공화주의자 뒤르켐은 대혁명에 대해서 부정적이지는 않다. 그러나 뒤르켐은 대혁명 안에서 절대주의의 유산을 발견하는 한, 그것에 비판적이다. 뒤르켐이 보기에 절대주의를 특징짓는 중앙집권적인 국가권력의 형성은 “분명히 부분적으로는 병적인 조건의 산물이다. 진정으로 우리의 도덕적 정치적 중앙집권화와 통일화가 일어나는 방식에는 어떤 병적인 것이 있다. 국가(state)는 그런 광범위한 평준화를 일으키지 않고도, 국가(nation)의 이차적 제도들의 모든 다양성을 파괴하지 않고도, 스스로 사회조직의 유일한 주요형식이 되지 않고도 수립될 수 있다. 간단히 말해 우리는 삶을 그런 비인격적 틀의 수인이 되게 하는데 까지 나가지 않고도 도덕적 정치적으로 통일된 민족이 될 수 있었다”(1905: 124). 뒤르켐은 이 절대주의의 병리적 측면이 프랑스의 민족적 문화로 자리를 굳혀갔다고 본다. “군주제가 기울인 노력의 지향은 바로 국가의 도덕적 다양성을 평준화하고 지역적 제도의 다양성에 통일성을 부과하고 사회 성층 전체에 단일한 법전과 윤리를 수립하는 것을 향”한 것이었으며, 이런 경향, 즉 일단 규율의 습관이 형성되고, 질서를 향한 열정이 사회유기체…(생략)
